It seems very belated to be wishing you a Happy New Year as it is already February but as I haven’t done so yet I would like to wish you a Happy and Healthy 2020!
Last year you all helped us to raise £5,000 for Ryedale School which we were all delighted with. You may have already seen that this year we are not only raising money for school but also for Cancer Research UK. I no longer have children at Ryedale School and was wondering if I should continue in the role of Race Director for this year. Instead of leaving I came up with the idea of asking if we could also raise funds for a cause close to my own heart at the same time. During the planning of the Rumble last year I sadly found out that my rare form of appendix cancer had returned for the 3rd time and for a while I wasn’t sure if I would be able to continue helping organise the Rumble. I had a big operation in January 2019 which was thankfully a success and after a slow recovery I re-joined our amazing committee and was able to see another fabulous Rumble take place.
If it hadn’t been for research in to cancer it is possible that an operation might not even have existed for my diagnosis, yet despite it being a rare one I was lucky enough to have the chance for treatment. Latest statistics tells us that one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime which is an incredibly sobering thought. On the positive side because of research the survival rate has doubled since the seventies. That is why as a committee we all felt that Cancer Research UK would be a great charity to support this year alongside Ryedale School.
We have decided that £5 from each race entry will go directly to Cancer Research UK but I would be delighted if any riders would like to raise even more money for this extremely worthwhile cause by getting sponsored to ride the Rumble. We will also have donation boxes out on the day should you wish to contribute a bit more. Cancer Research UK use 82 pence from every £1 donated to help beat cancer, the other 18 pence goes towards raising vital funds for the future.
The routes will stay the same as last year as the new bit on the Inspire ride seemed to work better. We will have our now infamous well stocked feed stations (or tearooms as some people like to call them!) along all routes and of course you will be offered the post ride meal back at HQ.
I do hope you will join us for The Ryedale Rumble 2020, it is a brilliant day and despite the gruelling hill climbs everyone who rides it finishes it with the greatest sense of achievement.
Good luck with your training.
